Designing Labels with Procreate: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Writer: Envision LinEnvision Lin

Hello, fellow creatives! I'm Maggie, and today I'm excited to bring you a Procreate DIY label tutorial that will take your design skills to the next level. Labels are a fantastic way to add a personal touch to your projects, whether you're designing custom stickers, product labels, or anything in between. In this tutorial, we'll dive right into the world of Procreate and create stunning labels with transparent backgrounds. Let's get started!

Importing PNG Label Format:

The first step in our label design journey is importing a PNG label format with a transparent background. This is essential as it allows us to layer our designs seamlessly. In Procreate, you can easily import your PNG label format from your photos. Make sure that the background is transparent, and you're good to go!

Adding PNG Images and Color:

Now, let's create some visual magic. We'll start by adding our favorite PNG image onto a new layer. Scale and position it just right, but remember to keep the label and image on separate layers. Next, create another layer and use the rectangular selection tool to define the size and position you desire. Fill it with your chosen color, making sure it doesn't overlap with the label. You can even use a straight line to separate different colors. Voila! Your first label design is complete!

Efficient Label Duplication:

To save time, let's duplicate this label and fill all the empty ones. Group all the elements of the first label, making it easier to replicate. Swipe left and select "duplicate" to copy it into the second box. Make sure you have snapping and magnetics turned on for precise alignment while duplicating.

For clarity, rename the second group to "2" and the first group to "1". Change the color of group 2 to something distinct like blue. Now, select both group 1 and group 2, and create a new combination: group 1+2. Repeat this process, duplicating the new group and sliding it down to create two labels simultaneously.

Creating groups isn't the only way to replicate; we can merge all the label layers together to replicate them as a single layer. This method allows you to duplicate four labels at once, but remember to periodically check your layers to avoid merging unnecessary ones.

Color Adjustments and Deletion:

If you're not satisfied with the colors, feel free to adjust them at any time. Deleting unwanted labels is just as straightforward. Use the rectangular selection tool to box in what you want to remove, and then move it outside the canvas. Then, repeat the duplicating process.

Customizing Transparency:

Now, let's talk about transparency. By default, the transparent part assumes the background color, but you can adjust it to your liking. This customization adds an extra layer of creativity to your label designs.

Saving in PNG vs. JPEG:

Finally, we're onto the last step – saving your image. Choosing the right format is crucial, so let's highlight the differences between JPEG and PNG.

  • PNG format preserves transparent areas and offers lossless compression, resulting in clear images.

  • JPEG doesn't support transparency, retaining the default background color.

  • JPEG uses lossy compression, which sacrifices some image quality to reduce file size.
